Coffee Shop Loyalty Schemes are nothing new

Coffee Shop Loyalty Schemes: In Britain in the 17th C there were no low value, i.e. baser than silver, coins, so merchants invented their own. The new coffee houses were enthusiastic adopters. By 1654 there were 3000 coffee houses in England – Tea also available.   This item: A half penny alloy token. On front a Turk’s head. On reverse a hand issuing from a cloud, pouring from a coffee-pot into a cup. Issued in Aldersgate.

Leave the Money Gallery and go though the coffee area room 36 and 37 to to the Clocks Gallery. You will return to this coffee area at the end of the tour.
